I'm looking for a meter that will test cat5e, cat6, ethernet, rg59, and rg6 that won't break the bank. any suggestions

Re: Looking for a meter

I used to build specific test sets to check for continuity and shorts. is that what you mean?

Re: Looking for a meter

Should be easy to build one if all you want is to check for opens and shorts. One is safer if they take 2 lap tops with them and be sure the wire is in good shape.Sharp bends can damage the wire for computers and an ohm meter will not find it.If anyone can come up with a better tester let me know as my son and i are starting up a computer and cableing buisness.

Re: Looking for a meter

opens and shorts are not the only concerns.

good luck in your cable making business.

Jim do you have any training whatsoever in data cabling?

You going to need a lot more than a continuity check if your customers want the installation certified. :p

Re: Looking for a meter

I was just looking at Surface Transfer Impedance. It's a measure of the effectiveness of a cable's shielding.

An external field induces a current in the cable's shield. The current in the shield cause a voltage difference between the shield and signal conductor.

Re: Looking for a meter

a muti-tester If I have the cables already hooked up and want to test them. I'm tired of lugging a TV and Phone around. The ethernet would just be a bonus but not for a real need
