What do most guys do when they get a call about someone looking for work?

(a) Ignore the caller even though they might be a gold mine of a worker

(b) Give the caller the benefit of the doubt and ask to meet them even though you are not really looking for more help

(c) Call the person back and just explain that you are not hiring at the moment.


I was just curious since we had a 4 year laid off apprentice call looking for work, and was wondering if I would call him back just to see what the kid was able to do or just hit the delete on the answering machine.

I think option "c" is the "right" thing to do. It's always a bummer to call someone looking for a job and not get a straight answer right then and there.
 
If you've got no place for him/her in your operation, then you just can't afford him, no matter how good he/she is.
 
Yes, I agree that a reply call is always the best. but, what if the kid was a gold mine and you never bothered to find out, I guess thats the chances you take in the business?

It can never hurt to have the guy come in for an interview, and be straightforward that you're not hiring but want to talk anyway, then file his information away for future reference. But yeah, the chance you take is that he could get hired by someone else if you don't act on it. So as you say, those are the chances that you take.
 
I think you owe it to yourself to go down that road a little bit, at least. The hardest part of this biz is staffing, and you don't want to throw out what could potentially be manna from heaven.
 
I say option (b)

You might just find something you like.

You might find room for him if he is in fact a goldmine.

....at least option (c). Everyone deserves that courtesy I think.

Let's face it, if a guy bothers to call around to EC's that he's not even sure are hiring, he's not your average guy. Many guys would lay around at home, milk the unemployment checks, and occasionally skim the classifieds. A guy making unsolicited phonecalls is more ambitious than most.

Other than your time it wont cost you anything to bring the person in and give them an interview,I/am very greatful to the company that gave me a shot, and I was totally green-you can usually feel them out right away...
 
Call him and tell him thanks but you don't need him at the present time.


Then tell him if he has commercial and industrial experience and wants to move to the Smoky Mountains to get in touch with me.

Being currently unemployed - yep got laid off tuesday.... Sent out resumes wedneday, made appointments thursday, had 2 interviews today (Friday)

Might have a new job monday.... :roll: Anyway, I know at least one guy called me back on the phone thursday for entertainment value alone as I was asking too much in his opinion - but might start to rethink it by his tone, and by monday it could be too late to even set up an interview. As I might just be hired by the people who weren't hiring today that I interviewed with and went very well - as they are now one step ahead of the first guy - who might get beat out by the guys before them a few hours earlier.

Well thats just my optomistic thinking....

Good people are hard to find - and even in tough times you should at least entertaining the idea of getting good people - because in the next days of flush times when you need every swinging hand - you wont get them - because they will be spoken for.
 
Mark, with your credentials and knowledge you won't be looking for a job very long.

BTW, it will definitely be a payroll shock but, if you're interested in moving to the Smokies give me a shout. :)

Thanks for the offer there Roger - But I consider SHOES an essential part of PPE - Oh wait thats the hills of Virginia..... :grin: NC wear socks right?

(While in Marine boot camp in PI, SC there was a guy in my platoon who mailed his issued socks back home - Virginia - because he found no purpose for them)

Right there is the difference, You treat a guy who takes the time to send you a resume much different than the guy who calls and asks "You hiring"

If your In California I may have a lead for you if interested.
 
Contractors in our area are always looking for help, if the guy seems decent I'll refer him to a friend or refer him to the hall. I always try to help MOST (not all) electricians. There are a few I would push down a flight of stairs and believe me this would be justifiable in a few very rare cases.
