Wet snow is a much different animal than the powdery dry stuff you get in the north.

Rain, then ice, then wet snow on top of all that makes for much more treacherous conditions than a few inches or dustings you might get up there.

And the tree branches will break and fall, taking the power/phone/CATV lines with them ....

Peter this is the South, Snow is a major event, this is one odd storm and it doesn't matter about the question postions,
its snow in the South...

it *is* pretty amazing.... i rolled into birmingham, abadama, dec. 28, 2000,
and was going to spend the night, heading on in the morning. that night,
they got ice. about 3" worth.

i left on january 8. couldn't get out before then. the south doesn't get
enough nasty ice or snow to have the infrastructure to deal with it. when
ice drops, you just wait for it to melt. the people i was staying with, he's
an arborist, so we split wood, burned a cord every three days ourselves,
(4,000 sq. ft. house, 6 fireplaces, all heating and cooking by wood.)
4 days without power, ran the generator a few hours a day, and that was
that. there were three bridges to cross before i could get out of town, and
they all were glassy, adorned with broken cars....

splitting wood, cooking food from scratch, and i was introduced to a nice
lady who showed me southern hospitality.

ice storms in the south aren't all that bad, thinking back on it. they'll survive.
southern hospitality is the key.... :D:D

I'm laughing my arse off.....that's ridiculous. We get worse than that a couple times a week at least all winter. :D My driveway is an ice rink right now.

All righty then...I guess us folks in the "4 season" states are just better. :D

No, but the trees here have 'grown up' dealing with snow every year. The trees down south are not used to it so they will very likely have branches that will come down in what we would call a small storm.

What is with southernerns and the but bread ans milk when it snows? Makes no sense to me. I was at the store today and sure enough, people loading up on bread and milk.

It happens up here in the Northeast as well.

I know my brother is staying home today...

That is his work van on the far right at the house in southern Maryland. Here in coastal NC it is mid-30's with about 20 minutes of sleet and fluries earlier.

We got 2" of snow but there is ice on the roads. I stayed home- why not- no need to get stuck in this mess esp. since my truck is not a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

When I first moved to NC the schools would close (they are closed today) if there was a report of a possibility of snow. I remember my kids getting days off and it never snowed. Back then the seniors in high school drove the school buses so they took no chances.

Oh I can probably make it in but we do have a very steep and usually icy hill to navigate. I'll stay home and drink hot chocolate with whipped cream. Thank you. :D
