A question was posted in my Electrician's class recently. WHAT IS THE HEIGHT OF AN ELECTRICAL OUTLET BOX, NM, FROM THE FLOOR and what is the article? Can someone help me?

The question confuses me. "NM" is a type of cable, not a box. But I don't think there is a minimum or maximum distance either one can be, or must be, from the floor. Are you sure you quoted the question correctly?

The code does not require a height for boxes unless we are talking about the american disabilities act which does have height restrictions. I also am confused by the question.

There's no required height in the NEC. The recep can be in the floor (0"), and no more than 5'6" per 210.52(4)

Wouldn't that 5'6" be only if this receptacle is being counted as one of the required receptacles of 210.52. Otherwise the top of a 100' pole is fine, although not that useful. Just don't want to confuse the OP.

The question is very poorly writen. The nm part was to confuse you. As to height it must say more. There is no height requirement min or max unless it is to be counted as to meeting the required ones. Then max is 5 feet 6 inches and can be in the floor.

That's correct. You could put them at 8' if you had a lower one to satisfy the 6'/12' requirement for dwellings.

Could this question be related to nonmetallic extensions (Article 382) which are not permitted to be within 2 inches of the floor? :-?

It may also be confused with, what is the minimum height NM cable can be installed and not require protection from physical damage...

That question is a subjective question without a dimension that could be tagged to it.
People confuse it with the requirement of 300.5(D)(1) Emerging from Grade.
