Low-vo in walls

An article in the Nov-Dec IAEI mag titled "Low-voltage lighting systems", it states that the 2005 NEC allows class 2 wiring for lovo lighting to be installed in walls if the nameplate wattage of the transformer does not exceed 100 VA. I think this will be a plus when installing undercab lites? Comments.

Re: Low-vo in walls

I think that will open up the opportunity for alot more 'zip cord' in the walls than what will be seen, or expected.
I have no problems installing current Chapter3 methods.

Re: Low-vo in walls

luke,
To me zip cord is lamp cord. If someone wanted to use zip cord, I don't think it matters if it is code or not they will use it. I think SPT-3 is a lot easier to use & to terminate. How do you terminate 12 solid to 16 strand?

A wire-nut? :)

The new wording basically states use a chapter 3 wiring method or "Installed using wiring supplied by a listed Class 2 power source and installed in accordance with 725.52"

IMHO this is a good change, when using a class 2 power source 14 AWG is overkill (in most instances) and harder to conceal.

George,

Thanks for bringing this up.

I agree with Bob that this is a good fix (if it is as good a fix as it looks at first blush).

I've been looking at 2005 Article 411, and specifically 411.4(A)(2) which leads to 725.52. I'm finding a 25 Amp and 30 Volt limit on a low volt luminaire circuit, but no mention of the 100 VA. Can someone help with this?
