The company I work for uses a 2 conductor cable for 12 and 24 volt lighting that we run from remote magnetic transformers, through walls and ceilings in houses and condos to our fixtures. The cable is made by Carol Brand and the package on the reel reads
"Communication and Control Cable
2 Cond
12 gauge unshielded.
HI POT OK.
75 Deg c Type CL# (UL)
0r 600 volts Arm Style 2587 CSA CMG.
INN WALL:.030 JKT WALL:.041
In Accordance with NEC Article 725.
Suitable for use in external interconnection or internal wiring of Electronic Equipment

The part # is c2410a.41.10

Is this wire allowable by Code for Dwellings. Usually the transformer and fixture are made by same company or we use q-tran to follow 411
Any help is appreciated

Why not use NM cable (romex) ? That is what we use when running LV lighting in a house. I'll bet it is cheaper also.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say - no.... As mentioned it would need to be a "Chapter 3" method. Romex (NM), MC would be the only aceptable cables within a building.

This is the limb... IMO the only way you could use that particular cable for the application you describe is if it were in conduit. At which point THHN would be more economical.... Even that is reaching.

Not long ago I had a GC try to save money by installing LV landscape wiring himself after I left for some cable lighting. It cost him dearly... The wall openings and re-inspections ate a good chunk of his profit on the job.

Its too bad that (as strange as this sounds) 'Boat Cable' (UL 1426) cant be used. It looks like romex except with a thicker jacket. It has a PVC jacket, 105deg dry 600v rating, and 2 or 3 stranded TEW/AWM #14 or #12 conductors inside. It is perfect for low voltage lighting (*someone* i know used it for LV lighting under his kitchen cabinets without thinking, and the inspector probably just thought it was romex)

Does anyone make type NM with stranded conductors?

Thanks guys. Funny that it's not allowed because the boss is always complaining about the cost of it. In older condo buildings I have seen some stranded wire in 3/8 flex that was used for under cabinet lighting. I'm not sure if there is any romex or mc that has stranded wire being made now.

Stranded MC has been around... Stranded NM would dangle like snot off the framing IMO....

And BTW - it is not considered rude to correct the boss when he's flat out wrong - just tactfully.
