Do they make low voltage cable that can be run "free-air" above the classified area of a major repair garage? I have fire alarm, security, and data subs that need to get their cabling routed through this existing area at 30' AFF. to feed an expansion, and to put it all in conduit would be very expensive.

Maybe this 2nd part is dumb, but code 511.7 lists tray cable as being acceptable...is tray cable required to be in cable tray?

Your reference was incomplete. It also permits Type ITC per Article 725. Type ITC-ER is ideal for your application.

I was looking at that yesterday, but from what I gathered, that ER cable is limited to short distances such as between cable tray and device drops? It appears my only option is conduit raceways.

You best reread Art 727carefully; especially Section 727.4(5). The "ER" means "extended run". It is essentially an open wiring method.
