what does he mean by stereo wire?
I'm guessing but probably lamp cord or landscape wire, neither of which is approved for "in-wall" use as far as I know (at least not for electrical contractors who are getting a job inspected). On the other hand, homeowners, I'm sure, are using this type of cable all the time. From what I've seen most of the home theater installers in my area are using Monster Cable. Some of the sound system cables I've seen have various size conductors inside a jacket but I'm not sure it's approved inside walls for low voltage lighting.

Is lamp cord not allowed for 120v in walls or not at all? I have run lamp cord for hockey puck lights, unaware of this rule  . I have never had an inspection problem in several jurisdictions.
