Lately, we have been getting customers buying fixtures from Lowes. We get to the job and find out there is no way to mount them to any type of box we know. I told the guys to check the listing-- CE-- that, afaik, is a European listing and is not accepted here in NC and probably other places as well.

Is Lowes marketing that much out of whack with what is required?

Anyway, just thought you all should watch for this.
 
I just went and looked at a couple of pages of Lights (ceiling mount) and very few had a UL safety listing or CSA Safety Listing.
Most had a ETL Safety Listing.

Had a guy call yesterday wanting some sconce fixtures installed ( Made in Italy ). Nothing but problems. He ordered his on line.

I didn't know they were selling that European stuff at Lowe's so thanks. Something else to watch out for.

Trump may be right, put a tariff on that crap.

"CE" is not a listing. It is a manufacturer's self certification. It should never be accepted where a listed product is required.

As I've said before residential isn't my thing, but i put in a few lights for my bathroom a couple months back (yes from lowes). Upon doing so I actually read the instructions because the mounting holes weren't lining up with a round box and it says to only use metal boxes. Is this common to any of you?

Occasionally we run into a fixture that is narrow and needs to be mounted on a switch box but there is no reason for it to be a metal box.

Thanks Don. Here is a pdf on this issue. Ce was the only mark on the fixture. CE stands for Conformite Europepeene literally meaning European Conformity

Thats true, but look at the mark carefully. There is something known as "Chinese Export"

Yes, very common for fixtues to include an adaptor bracket that fits between old 3” fire boxes & the mounting screws intended for modern 4” round boxes.
