Is there any specified clearance requirements in the NEC relating to LP Gas line and Electrical conduits sharing the same trench, not raceway?

Re: LP Gas Line in Trench with Feeders

I don"t know about what the NEC says common sense should tell you not to put a electric line in the same trench as a gas line Think about it.

It does seem to be bad practice but what is the hazard? Gas and electric run next to each other all the time in the house and a fire or explosion there would be way worse.

Re: LP Gas Line in Trench with Feeders

Here our utility buries both the electric and gas in the same trench, They tell me it's because they want the gas to ignite instead of building up to a explosive potential.

Re: LP Gas Line in Trench with Feeders

The utility in our area has a 12 inch or 1 foot (whichever is greater ;) ) requirement for gas and electric separation on the outside of buildings. It has to do with damaging one or the other if one of them has to be unearthed for some reason.
I believe that can be found in the NESC book.

Re: LP Gas Line in Trench with Feeders

can you imagine running a trencher, and hitting the gas and electric lines at the same time?

Re: LP Gas Line in Trench with Feeders

Lets put the water, fire lines and the sewer in the trench too. They all enter the building anyway. What do you think jes25 it will be ok since they will be in the same building. PLEASE.

Re: LP Gas Line in Trench with Feeders

The local utilities usually make the call in my area. In most cases if the trench is wide enough (usually 2 backhoe buckets width ) they allow you to install both in the trench keeping electric, telco, catv on one side and gas on the other. As luck would have it I'm working at a residence where we will be doing exactly this today. There is a septic field directly in front of the house and no conduits are permitted to pass through the field. We will be trenching around it (an extra 50-75 feet) to the street for all utilities. We don't have to worry about water in this case - there is a well.

Re: LP Gas Line in Trench with Feeders

In my neck of the woods we incase all power conduits in concrete. I can't count the amount of times I have seen power conduits broken while I was living and working in Florida. I have yet to see it happen here in PR where it is required to pour concrete on power conduits. Seems to be an effective practice.
