The local utilities usually make the call in my area. In most cases if the trench is wide enough (usually 2 backhoe buckets width ) they allow you to install both in the trench keeping electric, telco, catv on one side and gas on the other. As luck would have it I'm working at a residence where we will be doing exactly this today. There is a septic field directly in front of the house and no conduits are permitted to pass through the field. We will be trenching around it (an extra 50-75 feet) to the street for all utilities. We don't have to worry about water in this case - there is a well.
