so, if you have a split wired outlet, then that is when you would need a 2 pole breaker?...
Only if the two hots are on different circuits. If it's a split wired, or half-hot, using the same circuit, no DP is needed.

210.4b says that each mwbc shall be provided with a means that will simultaneously disc. all ungrounded conductors...so, regardless if it feeds on yoke or more, it needs a 2 pole breaker
Or a handle tie. At least in the '08.
But a split-wired duplex may use the same circuit to feed both receptacles.... one hot and the other switched. And it's usually the same circuit doing both. So it's on only one SP breaker then.
ok, thats what i thought...so this applies in commercial also?
Out of curiosity, why didn't you use a meter/main combo? We rarely use a separate meter can and disconnect like that around here for typical residential services.
Are circuits 9/11, 10/12 and 14/16 MWBCs?
...No power, so I go to check the main panel and find an old six space bulldog panel with 2 single pole 20A and 4 single pole 15A pushbutton breakers, no two poles.
I open this panel and find some #8 aluminum and #12 copper tied into the lugs with the service entrance conductors. ....
We don't see those around here.
None of the supply houses carry them.
I don't know why, I would love to do them with combos.
Might be a POCO thing.

Nice install on the upgrade.![]()
I do see some of the neutrals appear to be discolored, were there other overload issues (like both red/black on same leg in the old panel) or was it due to the burning of the #12?
And what was the #8 that was hot-lugged in the old panel feeding?
Yeah, more than likely your poco doesn't have a meter main combo on its approved list, which is a shame if they don't because they save lots of time.![]()
