Do luminaries in a drop in ceiling need an additional safety wire to the structure, to prevent the future from falling to floor?? I tried to post this question earlier and can not find it listed. I went into a Church under construction and these 2 by 4s and cans are just laying in. Looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Trouffers are equake wired aside from the grid support wires. Try 410.36. rbj

I believe one would begin with IBC Section 1612.
Would'nt that make it the builders responsibility and not the electricians. The nec requires bolts screws and rivits. Are there any other IBC codes that were required to conform to?
Rick

we always wire them. however recently (not to me, but another local contractor) the building dept came in for C/O and had them cut them all off. somthing about the in case of fire the fire dept want the fix to come down with the ceiling when the pull it down! they are the AHU! just hope the contractor got it in writing! I know I would/will ask them to provide it for my records.

Exit light requirments, emergency lighting requirements, fire alarm system requirements, all these are example of things that are in the IBC that typically, the electrician is require to comply with.

I agree that the requirement for seismic support for luminaires comes from the building codes.

I posted the wrong IBC section earlier.Sorry. It is 1705. One would have to determine what category they are under and yes would be on the EC per specs.

The NEC does not require you to support luminares with any additional means other than those specified in 410.36 (b)for suspended ceilings,(the local AHJ-fire dept.) usually dictates additional support wires. This can get costly so you need to find out if this is requirement before you provide pricing for the job.I/ve been on jobs where the suspended ceiling was 20' below the bar joist-this is alot of work that you may not be aware of.
