i was just wondering what the code is concerning the use of main lug panels.i thought that if you have a meter socket with disconnect you could use a mainlug panel.is this not true?something about within sight or 50feet is what this other electrician was saying...
thanks ,Jesse

Re: m.l. vs m.b.

Hello Jesse
If in fact you do have a service disconnect located by the meter, the panel supplied by the service disconnect can be a MLO and there is no specific distance requirement. Of course this is provided the MLO is located in the same building as the disconnect.

Not so fast, if you please. Where is the overload protection, if you only have a disconnect by the meter? Looking at the exception that Ryan mentioned, it still requires overload protection (up to 6 breakers or sets of fuses).
