Main Breaker Vs. Main Lug

I don't believe there is an article that tells you when to use a main lug versus a main breaker panel.

It is a design decision. I don't believe you are ever required to have a main breaker panel at all. You can always put some other disconnecting means in front of a MLO panel to satisfy any disconnecting means requirements.

This is not an easy question to answer because there are many possiblities. For arguments sake, lets say you have a service feeding a single dwelling. Once you leave either the main panel or the main disco then all the other panels in the house can be main lug panels---the panel will be protected by the breaker at the service.

Hypothetically, I could have one main breaker panel or one main disco feeding 10 panels in the house all with main lugs only.

This does not mean that I can't have a main breaker panel if I want one.

Hypothetically, would that violate the 6 disco rule?

A single main disconnect can feed as many main lug panels as you want.

Celtic was questioning me hypothetically about the 6 handle rule. I was trying to comment on that by saying you couldn't have the 10 handles as your main disco. I didn't word it well-- if you read my other post I think it makes more sense
