If working above in a lift and working near energized lines I understand about keeping a safe working distance away. Should some type of grounding to the lift be employed before work begins ? This could be inside or outside work. I would use the ground grid outside or building frame inside . Is this a exceptable means ?

I think more details are necessary. Are the lines insulated, covered, bare? Are you working on the lines or just in the vicinity of the lines? What is the voltage?

You may even need to de-energize the lines or get a hot work permit and wear proper PPE.

Another possibility is that you may be able to cover the lines - even if temporary covering - but likely need to de-energize or wear proper PPE while in the process of covering them.

Grounding the lift will not protect you if you inadvertently touch the lines directly or with a tool or piece of equipment. It may even make that more dangerous. But iit could reduce the risk to you pr bystaders if the lift is what tois what touches the wires.
It will not make any difference in the decision whether the activity close to the lines is safe.

As other posters have mentioned a lot of the answer depends on details you have not provided but in general grounding anything provides very little in the way of personal protection and might even make a dangerous situation more so, especially if something that provides no protection is being relied on to protect someone from a hazard.

In any case, why would you need additional protection from the energized lines if you were a "safe" distance away from them?

Re:Ungrounded Buckets

Re:Ungrounded Buckets

The buckets in bucket trucks that the POCO are intentionally insulated from the ground. Part of the boom is fiberglass.

That would tell me it's probably not a good idea to intentionally ground a lift or bucket truck.

10-4 on the ungrounded design of buckets on high line trucks.
I have heard stories where the truck jacks unintentionally came in contact with pole ground cable and the result was disaster.
There are other live work methods where the worker comes directly in contact with the live line and is actually tied to it, thus at the same potential.
Each method has a protocol.

Was your computer grounded when you typed this line?:)

Nope, but I was using my smart? phone which has two problems with this forum

1. The reply and edit function scrolls in a way such that I often cannot see what I am typing or have just typed. I really should try Tapatalk.
2. That means I cannot see what oddities ought-to-correct has perpetrated.
3. Once I read what I posted, it is not worth the pain trying to fix it.
:)

You're giving way too much credit to your "smart phone"!:D
