Plug his generator in to the outside receptacle to power part of the house?

What were they used for in theater work? Way back in the old days I found a number of two wire male to male cords stored with the theater lighting equipment at the high school I attended. I assume they were for some type of patch panel to connect the dimmers to different circuits, but never found any panel like that.

More often than not they were used for movable scenery that had "practicals" (fixtures) on them. Platforms would get rolled into position and then the "suicide cable" would get hooked up. all that because the inlet cost $12-15 and the duplex receptacle was $1.50. Never did make sense to me and I made more than a few people cranky when I told them they would not be allowed to use them. :roll:

Is there a code section than prohibits a power cord with a male plug on both ends?
I have made the statement that I will be fired before I let this happen.
Other than it is completly stupid to do it, is there a code reference I
can use. Once I quote chapter and verse they always back off but sometimes that is what it takes.
