I wanted to know what type of panel some of you have used for a 30amp or 40 amp residential manual transfer panel. I have looked and the brands I have seen look like a toy compared to the normal 200A ATS or for that matter the larger ones yet.

I have a customer who would like @ 6-8 cir for his personal generator.

Recomendations?

Re: Manual Transfer SW

Thanks Men. Those were the models I was looking at but have never worked with that brand. Mainly because I have never installed an Xfer sw this small.

Re: Manual Transfer SW

I like Gen-Tran and Reliance.
Having handled all three brands, I am not fond of the quality of the Emer-Gen panels.

You think they could have fixed the flex for the picture, huh? :p

Re: Manual Transfer SW

Sq D QO makes a service rated 60 a manual transter switch,it`s a 4/8 panel and cheap compared to others out there.
Mind you it is only the panel with a 60/60 lock out for gen feed or poco switching ,I nipple main panel reroute circuits The h/o wants on and drop below panel area male
twist lock in a 2 gang old work box outside, male from genset to fem for genset connection,2 gang in use cover
Total cost under $100 material or close to it.
With the gen set/poco lock out both can`t be energized at the same time.
While the 60 amp transfer switch is in poco mode the twist lock is de energized.Ok so it`s not UL listed, but the difference I can quote from a ul listed set to this is 1/3 to 1/2 the price range.
I did the 1st one for myself last year after te hurricanes knocked us out for 3 weeks, after 3 days of back feeding  I stopped got what I needed and 45 min later I had my well, fridge and lighting circuits on line. When the poco got to us my wife shut off the genset switched to poco and 10 min later a/c flowing ;)

Re: Manual Transfer SW

Square D makes an interlock kit that fits most of their newer panels: All you need is the first 2 positions right adjacent to the main. The main breaker and the back-fed alternate supply breaker are mechanically prevented from both being in the "on" position at the same time.

No need for any other transfer switch, or sub-panels, etc.

I believe other manufacturers (such as GE) make similar generator kits for their panels, as well.

Re: Manual Transfer SW

KB sparky I`ll have to check later but the lising
of service approved equiptment/If the add on is ul listed then the gen set would have to be able to handle the complete load calc.
The one I stated is for the losd computed in direct relation to the gen set used and the wanted circuts.A whole house genset is in the 1000`s of kw`s.Maybe a 50 or 100 kw set.
My senario is around 6kw no a/c no cook top just a well ,some lighting, and a fridge.A poor mans genset.but when I have power and the guy in the 1,000,000.00 home is in the dark and when he asked if he could plug in I told him sorry I`m at the max.(Oh I quoted him a set up like I have with a 6.5 kw gen set and circuits he wanted to stay hot.At $4300.00 with the genset (Honda)he laughed as he walked away) Now was my time to laugh as he walked away :D to a dark no water $1,000,000.00 home ;)
