I am looking at a potential cost plus project and I was wondering what an average material mark up is?

I do 20% on most common items that have mechanical use, like switches, plugs, panels, breakers, 15% on most rough in materials, and 25% - 30% on generators, and other heavy use high failure prone stuff.

We do not use a one size fits all markup. a $1.00 item may mark up 40% were a $100.00 item will mark up 20% and a $1000.00 item will mark up 10%

generally speaking the cheaper the item the more the mark up

a $1 item may be marked up 100% and a $1000 item may be marked up only 10%

If we do a small 1 day job and our cost for material was say $400 - it would be marked up 30% - we would bill $520 for the material.

You can stick with a set markup provided you pass on all other material operations costs such as any freight or special handling or staging charges.

Charging 20% on a wirenut is not enough, IMO.

I usually mark up materials between 10 and 30% depending on how much it cost. Then I add to every T&M invoice a miscelanous item and add between 3 and 10% of the total. This covers tape, wire nuts, screws, tie wraps, nuts, bolts, drill bits and basically anything I don't feel like listing because they are too small. I'd guess it puts at least a 100% markup on these items.

100% minimum up to 2-3 hundred dollars. On higher end stuff I charge what I think I can. 20% on a $5000 piece of equipment ($1000) is fine.

Small stuff like switches/plates go up several hundred percent. I will charge 3 or 4 bucks for a simple SP stoggle switch.

Think about a single pole toggle switch. It cost you 50 cents. You mark it up 20% and net 10 cents on it ?

Why bother?

At $60 an hour, you will burn that 10 cents in 7 seconds simply by writing "1 SP IV switch" on the invoice. Then, you still have to do more accounting (inventory) and restock it.

I am not The Home Depot. I can't afford to stock and deliver materials at their margins.

Seems to me the scale as shown encompassing too wide a range of markups.
I would think $20 dollar increments to $100 and 100 Dollar - 1000 hundred dollars step range
(100, 200, 300, 400, 500) and stepping $1000 per past that to $10,000.00 - Unless you are building a super Excel spread sheet with hidden formulas to calculate charges. Besides where in a residential/ light commerical/industrial service market are you going to spend over $10K? (Burnt services and swithboards/panelboards/repair material air frieght to site being the exception rather than the rule in most cases.
