Thanks guys for all of the help, I passed the master electrician exam last month. In my area a masters license is not require to preform the duties of an electrical inspector. As a master electrician I feel better towards inspecting the work of master electricians.

Re: Master Electrician Exam

we have three types of master electricial license in my area, The grandfather master...those that did not have to take an exam prior to 1975, The transfer master... those that transfer from another city within the state. Lastly, The master electricians the passed a standard block or icc exam. As an inspector the work quality and code compliance is almost always better for the electricians the passed a standard national exam rather then the ones given by a local good ole boys.

Re: Master Electrician Exam

I happen to know several excellent electricians that perform outstanding high quality work that have not or cannot pass an electrical exam. One that I am refering to doesn't even have a high school dimploma or GED and can barely read.

At the same time, I know a few guys that carry a license and can pass any test that you put in front of them, but couldn't wire a circuit to save their own life.

In my opinion, it take a person with either a great character or one with great talents to posses both skills. One as a book smart test taker, and the other that of a skilled worker in the field.

An exam is one good way to determine ones abilitities and knowledge. I too place more credibility in those that have passed a state recognized exam to those that have essentially been handed a license for grandfathering or some other administrative policy. However, sometimes those guys deserve it.

Re: Master Electrician Exam

I am refering to those who have master electricians license and can not calculate a service load or how to select proper materials for an installation .
