Hi everyone im new to the forum. My name is joe and ive been a residential electrician on long island for 6 years now. I know the requirements for getting a master electrician license in suffolk but im worried because i might have an issue and need some opinions and advice. My first job in the trade i was half on the books and half off (my old boss said it was better, and i didnt know any better at the time). So i was wondering if that is going to prolong my chances of getting my master license, because half of my time isnt accounted for? I cant find any information online about this issue.

I know nothing about your county but it's my understanding you need x hours. Do you have the required documented hours?

Welcome speaking from my own experience this forum place to get some good advice and learn about our trade. I don't know the experience requirements in your area to sit for a masters exam. I would say however that where I live it does require documented experience. It does not say how you were compensated. I would submit all the time you worked for your first boss if they contact him it's on him if he shares the fact that he paid you off the books you did however work for him. I don't think the people verifying your experience care about the pay/tax/liability issues your old boss was violating. I think they care about verifying the tim you have in the trade. Good Luck!

Give a call to your licensing board. They will probably be very helpful, even if the answers they give mean you have to do more, at least you will know what you need to do. I just finally went and got my Texas master license and it was helpful to run through the application with the lady at the Dept. of Licensing.

When your boss said it was better, he meant it was better for him and not you.
