master/ slave lighting

Is Master / Slave wiring with one ballast located in only one fixture.
Can the ballast in only one fixture control other fixture?

I am not sure I understand the question. Usually a ballast is within one fixture but I believe the ballast may be remote and control more than one fixture.

Master / Slave fixtures are somewhat common in schools and some office buildings. They usually come (always have in my experience) with modular plugs to connect th two fixture bodies together.
