Welcome :) But trust me, you are already very far.

What are traveling waves?

Its not punishment imo, knowledge is power. I am thinking for one day going for a PhD, but will see. Converting a countries power system to HVDC takes a good understanding of everything at hand.

Traveling wave in simplest terms is an electromagnetic pulse (ie current/voltage) that propogates in a conductor

in steady state current is uniform, more or less, in a conductor
a transient is a wave/impulse that varies in mag vs time/location

one of the classes I took was HVDC/FACTS
I was surprised how much dc is out there and for how long

the instructor http://www.engineering.pitt.edu/gregory_reed/
to say the man knows his stuff is a monumental understatement

Better pay, better working conditions, more respect.
You do have to take on a job that actually will offer that kind of pay. If you are a journeyman electrician and remain in a journeyman job position even though you have a high level degree, the pay typically levels out well below what most holding such degrees are looking for. If you start your own business - you can make whatever you want to make - presuming you run a successful business, but the catch there is you don't necessarily need the degree, though at least some of what you learned earning that degree may help you.

Wow!:cool: Lucky him and lucky you. :) By chance does that book come in PDF? If not it will be on my list.

Is this the same concept as mentioned?

I must admit the concept looks like something out of the future.

Many utilities are installing traveling wave detection systems as a means of fault location. As you've seen with the SEL product above, we're starting to see traveling waves used in protection as well.

very interesting
I have a midterm tomorrow
I'll try to digest it afterwards :)
I could see it being very accurate and fast fault location
I'm a supervising engineer for an EPC substation contractor. I've yet to see anyone install SEL's relay yet.

Maybe for your POCOs, but in some POCOs SEL is the Iphone/Cadillac of relays.
I didn't mean they're not installing SEL relays, I meant I haven't seen anyone install the T400L. Easily 80% of the relays I install are SEL.

Oh, my bad :ashamed1: Thats me when speed reading :ashamed: If I am correct the T400L is just coming out now, so its unlikely anyone single person would see it in service. As for the 80% of your relays being SEL, good choice my friend, good choice :cool:
