Well, the FASTEST way is to tell us where you're from :D

why you gotta be difficult? it's not that hard:)

have to work - call you state licensing board, they'll give you a list of exam prep courses. take one. but take a good one.

Right here.
E... you're still okay in my book! To the OP, your question can't be answered with a general answer. It really does depend on your state, and sometimes even your county or town within that state.

Very early on an electrician told me get your licenses asap, keep them up, get those master next. You'll generally get more pay than the unlicensed guy, it shows the boss your dedicated and if you ever go in business you set.

Well I worked for a large firm on Monday (22 years ago) the CEO called us in and said specialist were over rated primadonna's and Friday he was closing the testing business, I asked what were we supposed to do and he said, I don't care just don't do it here. I'm not all that smart but I got the gist of his thought process. I already had all my licenses and in two weeks had most of the paper work completed to start doing work legally.

I work industrial. I was required (someone up top changed the rules) to get at least a Journeyman card (no license in SC except contractor) so, while I was at it, I took the master and passed both last year. Got my review last week..... same old 2? % raise! I spent about $2,000 with fees, study materials, ETC. Geeze! Spent most of my raise getting it! Oh well....... If I ever go out on my own it may come in handy!

I don't have my Masters and doubt I ever will.

Having a Masters will not raise my pay and will only benefit me if I want to go out on my own.

Very true Bob.

Here in SC, a journeyman can pull a permit for a job just as easily as a master (you don't have to have a contractors license). So the extra $85 I spent on the master test doesn't seem to really give me any advantage except "braggin" rights.

Now 22 years later do you share that view of specialists? :D

OH MY GOD YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Train an electrician to do a speciality and all of a sudden he is a specialists and he no longer feels he should have to dig a ditch (fault locating), or move batteries "I'm a _ _ _ _ _ (fill in the blank) specialist.

YES and all (well most) of my old bosses, I disagreed with, I now realize were right, even the one that fired me for running my mouth.

Additionally, that guy was right for closing down or group, I found out later our boss had lost almost $250,000.00, that year. What I never figured out is why they kept him for another year?

Hockey IMO you are still a better tradesmen for having that paper.
