Maximum Number of Circuits To A Detached Structure

In a single family dwelling structure, what is the maximum number of circuits that can feed a separate structure without installing a panel in the separate structure, e.g. a panel in a main house providing power to a detached garage.
What section in the NEC governs this? Thank you in advance.

I think 225.31 and 225.33 limit the amount of circuits to 6 (or 12 circuits consisting of 6 multiwire BC's). This section doesn't require a panel, but it does require a disconnecting means. You could still satisfy this rule without installing a panel though, so in my opinion your question does not have an answer.

I am guessing two circuits, if provided by a multi-wire cable, as long as a disconnecting means is provided at the detached structure. This would allow one leg of the circuit to control lighting and one to control recpectacles ( properly protect by GFCI) and sharing a comon neutral. The disconnects could be a simple single pole switch located at the point of entrance of the branch circuit entering the building. Am I viewing this wrong or is that your question?

It is not this cut and dried. Normally, the answer is 1 branch circuit (which could be a normal 2-wire circuit or a multiwire branch circuit). This is per 225.30.

However, 225.30(A) and (D) allow for more. Most applicable would be a separate circuit that only controls a light via a 3-way switch from the house.
