Re: Maximum # of NM-B per drilled hole?

Alright, two things:
NEC says that derating applies to more than three current carrying conductors run together. It seems to me then, that you would be limited to one piece of Romex through holes before you had to derate.
Unless the grounded conductor isn't actually counted as a current carrying conductor? If that's the case, could someone explain why?

Also: My understanding is that derating was applied to conductors to compensate for the build-up of heat. It seems strange that pieces of Romex run in an un-insulated space, where 14.5 inches out of every 16 is free air, would be subject to the same derating rules as circuits in, say, PVC. Seems to me that heat would be much better dissipated by the Romex than anything in conduit.

bigjohn,

First: read my post on the first page about de-rating.

Second: I agree that the heat build-up on NM in an open space is less than in PVC. This section of code deals with all eventualities. What about when insulation is blown all over and under the NM in the cavity, thereby traping the cable's heat? Can you assure me that that will never happen?

Earl,
Please cite a code section saying how much space is required before it would be bundling.

Earl you are not offending me and, NEC Article 310.15(B)(2)(a)Adjustment Factors: is not in question here.

The question is how you are so matter of fact in your interpretation with no real back up except your opinions. If I were being inspected by you and your jurisdiction had not provided some formal interpretation I would think your written violation would be somewhat lame to say the least, and would need to be challenged.

I ask again what standard (NEMA, ANSI, AIA, CIA, FBI, IOU, or whatever) sets the air spacing requirements to define bundling conductors side by side in a non inductive wiring method?

In a dewelling, if 6, 14-2 cables are installed in a hole & there is one feed & five switch legs why would you have to derate?
