In our area you have to tie the fixtures to a structural member as well as clip them to the grid. We usually drop 2 celing wires per fixture and hit opposite diagonal corners. The MC can then be bat-winged (KX) to those wires and held off the grid.
Code or not, if you have 6 foot long pieces of MC laying all over the place, on the grid, it looks like crap, who wants to do that?
