Per the NEC Article 320.15, Armored Cable is allowed to be run exposed along the bottom of floor joists as long as it's fastened to every joist. The same application is not specifically called out for Metal Clad Cable in Article 330. Although 330.10(A)(8) under "Uses Permitted" says "As open runs of cable".
Would this allow you to install MC cable along the underneath of exposed floor joists?

Yes, but if the AHJ or inspector sees this area as a wet location you would have to use a type of MC recognized or suitable for the location.

Thanks Roger:
I'm glad someone agrees. But the whole AC/MC cable thing gets me, and I think a lot of other trades people confused. These Articles seem to cause a lot of head scratching as to applications when you compare the uses allowed and not allowed between both article's. I looked in the archives here in Mike's website and it seems that it is a recurring theme. The NEC could do a better job of clarifying the uses permitted and or applications better in 2008.

I don't think untreated wood is rated for a wet location, so unless the inspector is requiring materials suitable for wet locations, it is not a wet area.
