I'm rewiring a house that was built in 1955, the entire house except for the kitchen is wired with NM cable W/ reduced EGC. The entire kitchen including the range recep is wired in MC cable. Was this ever a code requirement? Also, were 3 prong grounding type receps not available at this time, 2 prong used thruout with EGC bonded to metal box.

that MC was probably type AC cable AKA BX cable. the sheathing over the BX cable was legal for EGC purposes if it contained a metal tracer. if you strip the cable you should see a thin silver tracer you just cut off

Is the kitchen wireing the same vintage as the rest of the house? If so, it is probably AC cable ("BX") and may not have the bond strip in it.

BX was used alot in my area in the 50s, and I dont think three pronged grounding recepts became a requirement until the late 60s early 70s
