I remember reading some rules for mc wiring to flourescent fixtures in lay in ceilings, but i cant seem to find them in 330 or 410. I'm trying to find max length for a fixture whip. Can you guys help?

330.30(D) Unsupported Cables. Type MC cable shall be permitted to be unsupported where the cable:
(2) Is not more than 1.8 m (6 ft) in length from the last point of cable support to the point of connection to a luminaire (lighting fixture) or other piece of electrical equipment and the cable and point of connection are within an accessible ceiling. For the purpose of this section, Type MC cable fittings shall be permitted as a means of cable support.

MC whips can be any length if they contain the same size conductors as the branch circuit. However, their last unsupported length can't exceed 6'.

support isnt the problem. my boss is telling me I cant run mc for more than 6 feet between fixtures, support or otherwise. but i cant find that in the code.

You can't find it because he's wrong. Tell him to read the Article that I've posted.

BUT...is the boss saying that because of local ordinace or job spec?
I dont't see where the OP said that the boss said it was a code issue.

Well this may be true, but the OP was specific about Article 330 and being that is the NEC forum I based my response on the NEC. As stated by Celtic, there could be a local code that prohibits this but it's not supported by the NEC.

Wow, those 1000' spools we're using would have some voltage drop! And that would be a lot of caddy clips.

:D

Even with a huge voltage drop your 1000' of cable would be code compliant.
