Is MC allowable to run in a metal barn. The wire would be exposed. Will that give the wire protection to pass inspection?

Does this barn fall under 547? If yes than jacketed/PVC covered MC is allowed.

547.5 Wiring Methods.
(A) Wiring Systems. Types UF, NMC, copper SE cables,
jacketed Type MC cable, rigid nonmetallic conduit, liquid tight
flexible nonmetallic conduit, or other cables or raceways suitable
for the location, with approved termination fittings, shall
be the wiring methods employed. The wiring methods of Article
502, Part II, shall be permitted for areas described in
547.1(A).

I find it hard to judge depending on details of "barn".
Standard (non-jacketed) MC is not an allowable wiring method for an Agricultural Building (Art 547), MC is not allowed where subject to physical damage or corrosive conditions (with exceptions), or in wet locations (subject to conditions).
If you can rule out the above, MC is fine. :)
