MCA 20.5 AC equipment

I often see minimum circuit ampacity for AC equipment listed: 20.5 amp or 30.5 amp.
Is that just the way the math works or are they wanting a larger conductor?

Most likely how the math works. There are rules in the product standard that specify how the calculation is to be made.
