Hi

Just wondering if anyone knows the size allen used for mechanical lugs in an Erickson 283-1 CT cabinet. They are pretty large and I need to buy the right size.

I can't say I 'know' but I would bet they are 1/2" or 3/8"

I agree....Where is a good place to get a set of these? I went to Menards and Home Depot. My next stop was gonna be Autozone.

Or get a set of T handles...i picked up a nice 11pc eklind set the other day for $31 from mcmaster-carr or whia has an insulated set for $62 or something but both of these only go up to 3/8

I got my at Bob's Tools. Too bad Bob doesn't have a store near you.

Surely there's a serious-as-a-heart-attack tool store near you that stocks allens larger than 5/16". WW Grainger, Fastenal, maybe?

Until you get to some breakers that require an inch or two of the hex to reach the terminal (Larger C-Hs come to mind). But the 'socket' type will also allow you to use a torque wrench.

I've just made my own over the years. A set of standard sockets, and a bunch of long hex keys. Cut the keys off with a chop saw, and epoxy them in to the sockets. I've got a complete set up to 5/8" in 3/8" drive and 1" in 1/2" drive.

Did you make those long allan sockets?

I make my own too. But instead of epoxy I cross drill them and put a roll pin in. This way if the hex end breaks or twists ( no I do not tighten lugs that tight) I can replace the hex part.

Rod couplings are a cheap alternative...you already have the ratchet set and handle, right?

Torque that coupling using the sockets you already own.

I haven't found a source for the long-arm ones. They're always too short for many of the lugs in breakers.
