I can tell you getting hit by 1kv megger more than tickles and 5kv, without telling you, how I was stupid enough to know this HURTS and knocks you in the dirt.

Had this new guy on my submarine (Back in the day) who had a hard time getting out of bed to relive the watch (My watch by the way) so I had someone take my station and went to wake him up.

His toes were sticking out so I put my Megger leads on his toes and really woke him up, smacked his head on the light in his bunk pretty hard and he was pissed, but he was never late to relieve a watch again. Come to think of it, nobody was ever late to relieve me after that.

BrianJohn., what you say that useally sum it up and i allready got hit from the megger too it do hurt like crazy but i rather keep this forum clean.,,

A bit off track, but my fault locator puts out a 500v DC pulse. I always warn customers to stay clear of the leads. Looked over to see one sitting back in dirt. His comment... "I thought you were kidding."
Speaking of tools, does anyone use one of those laser range finders to measure room dimenssions, ceiling height etc. Are they pretty accurate? I saw one being used today in a site visit, it looked pretty cool. e/m

I don't have one, but the ones they sell at the Big Orange & Nig Blue stores are worthless. A buddy has one, and it's accuracy is about +/- 10,000,000%.

I've seen Hiltis (PD30s) used a lot on job sites... so maybe it's a good one?

I met with a guy the other week to rent a lift for a weird job, and he used one of those to measure the ceiling height. I guess they work okay. I have one that's ultrasonic, and it seems accurate enough for anything I've ever used it for. It's not like you're going to use one of these gadgets to cut crown molding or anything. Gives you a pretty good rough idea. I use mine on estimates to make a rough dimensioned sketch of the building or home's layout for various figuring (load calc, heat loss calc, receptacle layout, etc.).

I heard once that one of the biggest consumers of Meggar type equipment were police forces of third world countries.By placing the clamps of one of these devices on some of the more sensitive areas of the body you can turn a usefull piece of diagnostic equipment into a vey portable torture device.

I am stumped on this one. I use the Fluke 1520 and 1507. I mainly work alone. Are you telling me megging branches even with 500V can have a lethal jolt for someone on down the line in a straight feed:confused:

Although the jolt may not kill them, the other effects just might. Electricians have been killed by a fall after receiving a non-lethal shock.

Agreed, in fact falls is the #1 cause of death for electricians, many caused by a mild shock.

Why do you do megger tests?

Why do you do megger tests?

I do residential and light commercial, I don't own a megger. What are the circumstances where you would use one? I'm guessing that when you pull feeder conductors through conduit you megger as a "sanity check" to make sure you didn't gouge the insulation during the pull? Better to find out before you throw the switch and find out the hard way?

How do you hook it up? Again I'm guessing one lead to a conductor and another to the conduit? How does the megger indicate that a wire's insulation has been damaged? Will it tell you how many feet down the wire the damage is at?

Inquiring minds...
