Those are handy when you need to adjust to the thickness of the finished wall.
I found that the screw slot has to be pushed way back if I want any chance of installing a Leviton USB duplex receptacle in it.
 
If you can use a pvc box, this one from Arlington Industries, model F101, can be placed and screwed onto the stud in a manner similar to a pocket screw

Yes those are great. Actually what is even better is the allied molded version. It's got a "slider" plate so you can adjust the depth easier. I try to use those as much as possible when doing old work. It takes a little more time to locate the studs for new locations in plaster and lath but is well worth it IMO.
