Can anyone tell me what the most common meter base type and models are? I assume it will vary by PoCo but tell me what you see the most in your area please.

And why would we be asking this question? Much depends on the answer, as will become plain ...

Firsr off, meter bases themselves come in two varieties: with and without sealing 'rings.' The ringless bases have the entire front cover slip over the meter and hold it in place. Both types of bases use the same meters. PoCo specs determinewhat is acceptable in your area.

While still quite common, the simple round meter base is obsolete. It has but a 60-amp rating and lacks wire space for any sort of splicing; the practice was to selectively 'skin' portions of the conductors when placing more then one meter.

Now, were you asking about the pattern of the lugs, or 'jaws?'

The most common is the single-phase 4-jaw meter. More recent versions have one of the jaws at a right angle to the others, to prevent the meter from being 'reversed.'

Three-phase locations require a 5-jaw meter.

Three-phase locations require a 5-jaw meter.

Not always, 12S (Five jaw) is for single phase and three phase. The 12S has to be used on a single phase application fed from a three phase 120/208 bank because the 2S doesn't deal with the phase angles. The loss of revenue when using a 2S where a 12S should be means no raises...:p

Residential are mostly milbank horn bypass type commercial up to 200 use a lever bypass.Square D EZ pak is the most used for multiple meters. All are ringless.

Jog here a 4 jaw ring-less is the most common for new installs but a ring type is never refused, we install 4 jaw for single phase up to 320 amp rated bases anything larger gets CT's.

for 3-phase we have a few flavors depending on the voltage and or current or Y/Delta, a 240 or 480 grounded "B" gets a 5-jaw up to 200 amps, 208/120 Y or 480/277 gets a seven jaw up to 200 amps, anything larger gets again CT's, I have seen a few 320 208/120 and 480/277 seven jaw meters installed but not sure how they got them allowed as I have had the utility reject that proposal before.
