Hi
We have to install a 400A, 5-gang/meter over head supplied service for an existing two residential bldgs in one lot or property
one of the building, unit #1 is detached from 4-unit building.
per utility company meter spot, 5-gang service should be installed on unit #1, single unit bldg
than, (4) under ground feeders cross to the other 4-unit bldg.

can I just run (1) 400A feeder cross and land to a 400A disconnect switch with copper rod grounding driven deep in to the earth than attach (4) M.L.O sub panels to that disconnect switch.?????

Where is the code refrence in NEC??

Tanx

How would you meter those 4???

From what I can decipher, the five gang meter is on building #1. If so, then four disconnects at building #1 to serve building # 2, establish Grounding system at building #2. Or at the five gang meter, four separate conduits to feed four units in building #2. I'm sure I've left out details.

Unless the units in building #2 are isolated enough (under fire code) to be considered separate buildings, you will be violation the one feeder per building rule.
If that applies to this use, the division into four feeders would have to be made at building #2.

OK then, Toros states his five gang meter is at building #1. In think what he wants to do is: meter one unit at building #1, meter the remaining four units at building #2 all with one 400A service. Is there a code compliant way to get from here to there ?

if the POCO is DWP and the city of Los Angeles I would say the only way is to have all 5 meters on the detached bldg. The equipment will have each a main breaker. Then you can run your feeders underground to the building. All 4 individual feeders. Separate N and G.

If it were me I would try to convince them to allow all 5 meters on the larger structure, so you have only one underground feeder to deal with.

Maybe even go underground with the service.

John120/240 is correct
four of those meters are for de-attached bldg#2, a 4-unit apartment building
Since I can not run (4) feeders to that bldg #2 across, I want / can run only one 400A feeder to that bldg's sub panels through a 400a well-grounded disconect switch installed in that bldg (bldg#2)

Any objection ????

So the utility will not run the service to the second building? So you are proposing to have 1 meter on bldg #1 (+ service) and 4 meters (supplied by feeder) on building #2? IF I have that right I see two problems. One is I am not sure the utility would be thrilled about having that unmetered disconnect and feeder traveling so far, but that is their call. Also you would need meter sockets that do not have a N-G bond.
