Meter Height?????

My inspector said that Meter box(separated from sub panel) it is not wired properly and since my entrance wires are 6" short to connect it the way he wants it, the only way that I have is lowering the meter by 6" and he says that it should be at exactly 48" and won't let me do it.
Is there any tolerance for meter height?

There is nothing in the code about meter height.

However, the POCO probably has guidelines on that.

Around here it is 48"-78"

Meter height to center of meter in PDX/PGE is 4' to 6'

Check with the serving utility in your area.

How's the weather in Medford?

Is this a building inspector or POCO inspector? Unless there is a local code amendment the NEC doesn't say there is a minimum hight for a meter.

CALIF . S.C.E UTILITY BOOK STATES 4FT.8" TO 6FT. THREE to the center of meter main panel..............been that way for over 20 years? Just make the inspectors day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Happy day what ever consists of, i don't know ?

#1 How is it not wired properly?
#2 Who is the inspector, poco or ahj?
#3 How dose he want it wired?
Drop the meter 6'' then dig out in front of meter 6". That way you maintain 48'' above grade.

Sometimes, it is posts like this that make me really appreciate where i live.

Here in Kansas, we usually mount the meter at eye level, so it kinda depends upon how tall the installer is.

We also do alot of rural services on poles, and typically install a meter enclosure which also has a 200a main with a 100a xfer, these things are about 44" long themselves

around here you are supposed to set the meter at 5'6" to the center of the meter base socket, but I have set them lower and higher and no one has ever broke out a tape measure or said anything about it, I think they just dont want to have to bring a step stool or have to get on their knees to read the meter....

So when you install a meter on the driveway or walkway side of a house, and said path is on an incline....one side of the pan might be at 46" and the other at 50"....would that fail? The only "proper correction" being re-grading the path :-?

Ask him....watch him start to squirm and wiggle :D

Thanks everybody for all your answers, some of them were actually very funny
What we did (Saturday) is we lower the side of the house where the meter is by 4".
Let's see what he has to say on Monday.
I never had an inspector measuring my meter in the past and telling me that, after rewired it the way he wants it, is 1 1/2" short. (Yes, one inch and a half)
Maybe they don't get paid to bent over a little bit to read it.

I agreed and you guys were on it so I stayed out of the discussion. For what it is worth, we don't even need to leave the office to read the meters anymore. Ours have a transmitter that remote reads all the way back to our building. :smile:

They must be installed west of the Delaware and north of the Hudson Rivers....I've never even heard of them.

4' to 6'3" in AZ.

POCO rules.

I shoot for eye level. 4' seems too short.
