I think the meter collar MID is a phenomenal idea. There are a bunch of MIDs coming out, from all kinds of manufacturers, and there are multitudes of problems with them. The nice thing with the meter collar, is that you don't have a proprietary enclosure to route all your wiring through, and don't have to rip everything out when it fails or becomes no longer supported in 2 years. The tech is changing very fast, and a lot of people are hopping on a bandwagon (see EG4 gridboss), that won't exist in its current form or even form factor in a couple years. I don't do residential, but if I was to install a MID, which I think are going to become more and more popular, I would install it on a hunk of wireway and nipple into the bottom of the MID. That way when it fails or must get replaced, the wiring changes are easier. I'd also be using transfer switches to be able to bypass it when it fails.
