meter socket rating

can you assumed that if a service panel have a meter socket rating of 400a cont. , then the service panel can service 400A?

We should assume nothing. Check the rating of the panelboard itself.

the specs on the panel did not say much, about the capacity. The panel has a 300a service now and I am try to upgraded to 400a. But the only information I can find on paper is the socket rating.
