Anyone know why that a meter will read Hz from the utility supply, but when the same meter is used to check volts and Hz on a newly installed residential generator, before putting a load on it, it will not read Hz. The meter mfg could not give a reason, or be of much help, they just said that it will not read it from the generator. It is a true RMS multi-meter.We are going to try a different brand in the future and see if it will work, but it may be some time before it can be done.

My guess is that it would appear to be some sort of mismatch between that particular generator's unloaded voltage waveform and your particular meter's freq sensing circuitry.

FWIW, my Fluke 87 has never -- to my knowlege -- failed to properly measure a frequency under test.

What's the meter and genset combo?

I believe the genset is Generac, but the meter is an Ideal. A contractor friend of mine asked me about this today, and I tried to get some info for him, but had no luck. Most of our meters at work are Fluke, and when I can, I am gonna borrow one and see what the result is.

I have Fluke and Triplett meters, and they always measure the frequency on some pretty messed up signals. Sounds like your meter will only work on a sine wave, though the generator should be putting out something pretty close to that!

I'd second the use of an oscilloscope, I just got a fluke 123 and it's the handiest thing to have around. Being able to "see" what's going on helps with a lot of troubleshooting as well as satisfying one's curiosity. Try eBay!

I have looked at thei rprofessional 320 series and I found that the range for frequency is:

Frequency 4.000k/40.00k/4.000M/40.00M Hz 0.01%

I think 60 Hz is out of range, is it?

Hi All,

Can anyone help me in getting Current carrying capacity of cable lugs(ex. 6 Sq.mm, 16 Sq.mm, 25 Sq.mm, 35 Sq.mm.....) along with tech. sheet.
