metering of power

I had no idea state laws differed so greatly. Here in NYC, not only can you sub-meter tenants, its a local law for all large buildings to have their residential and commercial tenants sub-metered by the year 2025. I believe it is part of their green initiative because they believe that tenants that have to pay for their own electricity (rather than it being rent inclusive) will be more inclined to use less of it.
 
Of course it's allowed. What would be the point of sub-metering if you couldn't?

OK you asked - how about to keep track of what a sub-unit uses for any reason imaginable. For an industrial plant that may be paying the utility a single bill but accounting wise we can keep track of how much energy is used by different areas of the plant. Even where it is not allowed to sell energy it is not illegal to monitor that energy.

Not buying it. Sounds like Big Brother to me. More work than necessary. Go to your room.
