This is a true story... :) I was just on this job the other day....

Our shop is a 2 bay garage in a commerical building, we just moved in, Making small talk with the owner we asked if the building had a bastard leg, and he said yes, but wanted the POCO to upgrade to 3 phase 208/120, Not a big deal except for the community well needed a couple buck/boost transformers, so after looking at the service, a 400 amp cabinet with CT's, someone had already added two more meters and disconnects for expanding the building, when they fed the new meters they took power AFTER the CT's, so the POCO was billing meter #1, #2, #3... the only prob was meter #1 was also metering #2 and 3, this has been going on for about 7 years... :) The funny thing is that TWO different electricians Installed meter #2 and #3... You think one of the two would have noticed?

Well yes and no, it's not the POCO fault, they didn't wire the meters, it's gonna be interesting how this plays out... does the owner go after the two electricians?

It may not be the POCO's fault, but they did receive the overcharges. They should be easy to calculate with simple subtraction.

POCO should have looked at how there cashregister was wired. In this case fixing the bill should be easy.Everything was metered so no guess work.Keep us posted on this outcome.Someone goofed and needs to pay up.

You'll have to excuse my warped sense of humor, but that is very funny to me. Meters 2 and 3 were actually owner submeters, in effect, and they were being read by the utility. Funny stuff.

Here it happens quite a bit, maybe not with 3 meters though.
But is done like that on purpose.

Is it possible that one meter is registering the electric heat load, and one meter is a totalizer?

Both are metered and billed at different rates.

Have you seen the actual electric bills?

No matter how you look at it, the poco is double dipping... :) and I found it very funny myself also... the real funny thing is that it was easier to add a few lugs before the CT's, then the way they tapped off the existing wire... ALOT less work if you ask me...

They really don't have any regulation on that equipment, so why would they look at it..?

If meters #2 #3 are owner meters and not utility meters the utility won't have an I.D. on the meter and won't be billing it. This is not uncommon for sub let units to do. the owner may be subtracting it from his bill and adding it on the rent of the unit using it.
