Yes, if it is possible, the best way to order MI cable is with pre-made ends to the specific lengths. Some also add excess loop coiled up at one or both ends in case it needs to be repaired.

Field terminating MI cables is almost as tricky as old, taped MV cable terminators. The magnesium oxide compacted powder that provides the insulation between the conductors and the outer sheet is highly hygroscopic and the moisture trapped within eventually will result in the deterioration of the insulation value and to failure.

We do our own terminations and have not had any troubles. It would be a pain in the ass to use pre-made lengths.

Of course none of our MI work is above 480 volt or exposed to the elements. Perhaps that makes a difference.
