Michigan Master Electrician Exam

I've been a licensed electrical contractor for several years in Tennessee. The time has come for me to move back to Michigan where I'm originally from, to care for family members. I have recently been qualified to take the master electrician exam up there. However, looking over the exam information on the testing company's website, it cites many different sources, other than the 2014 NEC Code book, that questions will be selected from.

There are 75 questions in all. For Michigan electricians: How many of the questions actually come from sources other than the NEC book? I was under the impression that a vast majority of questions on electrical exams were taken right from the NEC.

You need to become familiar with the Michigan Residential Code and the Michigan Building Code. Michigan does not adopt the NEC in it's entirety. It refers to most of it.

We refer to Part 8 as the Michigan Electrical Code, which is for non-residential

80.1. Scope. The code regulates the design, installation, maintenance, alteration,and inspection of electrical systems including all wiring, fixtures, appliances, andappurtenances in connection with the utilization of electrical energy, within or on abuilding, structure, or properties, and including service entrance wiring as defined bythe code. Exception: 1- and 2-family dwellings and multiple single-family dwellings(townhouses) not more than 3 stories high with separate means of egress and theiraccessory structures shall comply with the Michigan residential code.

And, you also have to have this:


  • b. Master Electrician
  • Must be at least 22 years of age.
  • Have not less than 12,000 hours of experience obtained over a period of not less than 6 years related to electrical construction, the maintenance of buildings, or electrical wiring or equipment under the supervision of a master electrician or equivalent experience as determined by the Electrical Administrative Board.
  • Must take and pass the examination.

Can't tell you exactly what Michigan will have on the test, but won't be surprised to see some questions where just basic electricity concepts are necessary to answer them or knowledge of Michigan electrical licensing/permits/etc. laws are necessary to answer.
