Can you legally install a receptacle for a cabinet hung microwave in a cabinet bridge above a sink the same as above a stove with a microwave/exhaust fan.?

Sure. It may not be the most practical design but why would you think that you couldn't?

But the inspector may not like it if he thinks that whatever you may plug into that device could have its cord running through an area that could be filled with water.
but I see no reason that a microwave should be an issue.

Whether or not the inspector likes it is irrelevant, there is no NEC prohibition from installing a receptacle directly over a kitchen sink.

I am an old cow and my heaviest code training was in 1984. It would have never flown then. I am easily confused at my age. I just know when my kids take me to the dogtrack to bring extra ID.

I was initially taught not 6' from a sink and not over a sink. I had no specific references then just knew what I was told.

That is what makes our job hard. We work with someone while we are new and all there wrong ideas get passed off to us and we assume it was code. Have seen many 20 year men that think something is code but when pushed for number they cant find it. Actually better to take a kid right out of high school with never having seen a wire , put him in a class that teaches code and train him the right way. I am one of them that got trained the wrong way.

Man, you hit that one on the head. Just the other day I failed a simple resi. addition for 6 violations that an apprentice performed, all while under the not so watchfull eye of the master electrician.

You can install a receptacle right over a sink if you so desired

Use a GFCI receptical.

I have tested one of these, with my finger span barely touching to a faucet,
and it bites good, but trips off.
It was a mistake to check anything that way.
I won't do it again!
Years back, I used to check light sockets with my finger tip,
and I won't do that again, either!
That was when I was young, and foolish.

QQ,

My first acquaintance with NEC was 1959.
I think that somewhere in the past, it all faded out.
I continue to read along and the new codes fill the void.
Just keep reading and thinking about things.
I sure wish I had a Masters ticket,
because that may be the only way for "Old Crows" to keep working.
I do like this craft, wish I could go on working a lot longer.

However, In this economy, I don't know.
Two masters have called me! looking for work!
Which reminds me, I'd better get a little check to one, today.

From New York State

Qoug is from NYS. If there are 100 inspectors, there are 100 different code rules for the same item.

Someday in the next millenium, there may come a time when inspectors in NYS will be required to have some kind of training in electrical before being hired...just not yet.

If it's installed in the cabinet above the sink it does not need GFCI protection as it is not serving the countertop. It's distance from the sink is not important.
