miligausss-Has anyone?

Has anyone used a miligauss meter to look for open or faulted cables? I know I can find energized cables with my low end unit but have never tried for a faulted cable. Usually my other equipment works. Wondering just what the meter may indicate as I approached the fault.

If you a open cable, no current flow, no EMF.

If totaly open, I agree. What about fault to earth with some current flow, not much but some? Or a high resistance?

In that case, it would "seem" that you'd have balanced current up to the short to ground but not after it.

If there were a neutral to ground short after a load then you may have some emf's but with the arc faults you won't need the gaussmeter.

If you have a loop area that encloses a is very small area, then the magnetic fields from each wire cancel unless very close to the wire. A hairpin shape has a small area. Take the same wire and reform it into a large square shape and in the near field around around this loop you will get a substantial uncanceled field.

A hairpin shape produces a low inductance. The same wire length expanded into a circle or square produces a higher inductance.
