I'm assuming the cable you are referring to is tray cable. See 336.10(9). Tray cable type ER (exposed run) JP (joist pull), in one and two family dwellings follows Part II of 334 (non-metallic sheathed cable).

The cable has to be rated for the location, IE, riser, etc.

Greg it would be helpful if you actually asked a question. If you are talking about the rubber cord than that cannot run thru walls.
