Also keep im mind that the IBC Chapter 11 Accessibility section 1101.2 requires that buildings be designed and constructed for accessibility using ANSI 117.1. The side reach section of this standard is different than the ADA requirement.

308.3 Side Reach.
308.3.1 Unobstructed. Where a clear floor space
allows a parallel approach to an element and the
side reach is unobstructed, the high side reach shall
be 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum and the low side
reach shall be 15 inches (380 mm) minimum above
the floor.

The diagram above is from the ADA guidelines and there is no mention of side approach not being allowed in commercial settings. As a matter of fact, I have installed items at heights per the above diagram in USPS installations.

Well that may be true, but as usual, we here in CA march to the beat of a different drummer and we follow the CalDAG book (California Disabled Accessibility Guidebook, Title 24) which is more restrictive than the ADA.

Maybe I need to start putting in the disclaimer that my answers are based on Pacific Standard Time. : )

Latest California building Code supplement January 1, 2009
1117B.6

Minimum receptacle height is 15 AFF measured to bottom of outlet box. Max is 48 AFF to top of outlet box. Same for switches or controls

I added recepts and switches on a comercial job last year and could not find height requirements for handicap in the NEC. I was finally informed by the sheetrock guy who had a relative in the elctrical field to place my receps 24" AFF and my switches 48" AFF.

For the one who responded to my earlier post, I guess your right, the NEC does not cover this. From what I have read in the rest of this thread, it tells me there are other books I must obtain. I rarely do comercial work though.

That would be MAX height, minimum is what was questioned.

My response was actually to the question of if it was a commercial installation.
Yeah, I loose track of detail responding to a response of a response . . .

Appendix A to Part 1191 - Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities

4.27.2 Clear Floor Space. Clear floor space
complying with 4.2.4 that allows a forward or a
parallel approach by a person using a wheelchair
shall be provided at controls, dispensers,
receptacles, and other operable equipment.
4.27.3 Restates that "side reach" zone, but still specifies receptacles no lower than 15 from floor. (still the 1991 edition).

Also keep im mind that the IBC Chapter 11 Accessibility section 1101.2 requires that buildings be designed and constructed for accessibility using ANSI 117.1. The side reach section of this standard is different than the ADA requirement.

reach shall be 15 inches (380 mm) minimum above
the floor.

Similar to the aforementined 4.27.3
