I am a NYC electrician new to the NEC can someone tell me the minimum size conductor to be used from the load side of the meter pan to the line side of the disconnect. We used #6 THHN and fused the disconnect with a 60A circuit breaker which feeds a 6/3 to an apartment panel. is this acceptable and where can I find the minimum size requirement in the 2002 NEC

Thanks for your help.

Re: Minimum size conductors

The NEC defines the conductors you are concerned with as service conductors. The conductors on the load side of the 60A breaker are feeders. In both cases, the conductors must be sized for the loads to be served. In your case, as long as the calculated load of the apartment doesn't exceed 60-ampere, you are in complaince with the NEC.

Does the 6/3 have an equipment grounding conductor, meaning 2 "hots", 1 "neutral" and 1 bare or green? If not, you may be in violation by not providing 4 wires to the apartment panelboard.

Re: Minimum size conductors

NYC has an amendment to the NEC for the minimum size of service conductors. The minimum size is 4 AWG copper. There are 323 amendments to the NEC in the NYC version, minimum sizing of different types of conductors has been amended throughout the NYC version of the NEC.
